“For this was the real desert where differences of race and color, of wealth and social standing, are almost meaningless; where coverings of pretense are stripped away and basic truths emerge.” ― Wilfred Thesiger, Arabian Sands
THE EMPTY QUARTER
Explore The Land
The Empty Quarter, or Rub Al Khali, is the largest continuous sand dune desert in the world. Covering over a quarter of a million square miles, the largest part is in Saudi Arabia with smaller sections spilling over into the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Yemen. The first westerner to cross it from north-south was British explorer, Sir Wilfred Thesiger.
THE LIWA CRESCENT
Discover the History
The Liwa Crescent is a 138-kilometre route which links forty small settlements and marks the start of the true Rub Al Khali, The Empty Quarter. Originally no more than a sand path between the dunes ,beaten by camel caravans, it is now a streetlit dual carriageway making journey time from one end to the other just two hours instead of almost two weeks!
Experience the Culture
For centuries Bedu tribesmen have roamed the Rub Al Khali to graze their camels and to trade with settlements many days’ walk away. During the last 50 years Abu Dhabi has developed at an amazing pace, yet Bedu hospitality is just as important today as it ever was.
WHERE THE DESERT MEETS THE SEA
Al Dhafra makes up over two-thirds of Abu Dhabi Emirate. Along its hundreds of kilometers of coastline are stunning beaches and islands, which are gradually being developed for visitors.
